One of the biggest drawing points of the Elk Creektrail is the unique opportunity to combine a Wilderness trip with a ride on a steam locomotive. The trail then heads steadily uphill, winding its way along the creek and surrounding cliffsides. The tread is packed earth and loose rock. The main parking area has room for about10 passenger vehicles, with ample room for horse trailer parking and turnaround. If I were to do it again, I wouldve done a few more miles the first day - theres a nice campsite before the first peak. On day two, we encountered an even larger debris field between Beaver Pond and the ascent to the miner's shack.
