You were so afraid anyone might touch you. So that helped a lot. Gideon takes her suspicions (and the head) to the Sixth House, who in turn confront Dulcinea. Theres a hell of a lot of Bible stuff in there too. So how did you go about developing this really baroque world-building, with the magic system and the nine different Houses and Lyctors and the Resurrection Beasts? Emily: I will be totally honest: For as much as I love the Locked Tomb books, I find the world-building so trope-y that I kind of gloss over it. I have always been fascinated by enmeshed relationships, I think is not an unfair way of putting it. Emily, how do you feel about Harrow the Ninth compared to Gideon? How does the spikiness of this book function for you? But I felt like the coffeeshop AU was slightly too much. (John is exactly who I would be if, after a nuclear disaster that it is heavily implied I caused, I ended up becoming an immortal necromantic god, in that I too would spend a lot of time making pop culture references to properties no one else knows because they all came out 10,000 years before.) Shes so clearly insisting on a different version of events from the first book, and here we are, and we know thats not what happened. And I think that actually helps mask some of the Gideon energy. Harrow and Gideon travel to Canaan House, a decaying mansion on the planet of the First House, where they meet the heirs and cavaliers of the other Houses. No regrets. It appears to be the only surviving structure left on the planet everyone calls The First House (most likely a post-apocalyptic Earth, but we dont know that for sure yet), and it is in ruins. But I think thats every authors wish. The group is tasked with exploring the mansion to discover the secrets of Lyctorhood. Second-person narration can become exhausting in time, but it never does here, because we are willing the you of the book Harrow to process her trauma. The Emperor needs necromancers. In victory, her world has turned to ash. Of course, some things are better left dead. But Nona's not like other people. So I hope that every girl who got told off for being angry, and who, like me, in their secret heart of hearts, just kind of pretends that she has a huge broadsword or ax and hits people, its for them. It doesnt seem like its Harrow, does it? How do you feel about the world-building that happens in this volume, and how do you think it works at setting the stage for the forthcoming Alecto the Ninth? Especially on the battlefield, that kind of thing is just absolutely bread and butter. It is deep when you expect shallow, raucous when you expect dignity and, in the end, absolutely heartbreaking when you least expect it. So how did you strike the balance between keeping us within Harrows perspective, but then also having Gideon needle at her periodically, so that we sort of get the idea as we read that theres something more going on there? It brings her to life like a fingersnap. But I will say of that feeling of never being able to achieve anything: The world is set up to make you feel that way. For some readers of the novel, that death is just the latest iteration of the infuriating Bury Your Gays trope, in which lesbians are introduced in popular culture only to be immediately killed off, never left with a happy ending of their own. Her guilt led her to breach the Locked Tomb as a young girl, where she fell in love with the immaculate corpse of the beautiful girl entombed within. That is something that is going to be, not explained, but visited again, in the third book. Harrow is trapped in an endless trauma loop thanks to a whole bunch of events, stretching all the way back to being raised by two people who would kill hundreds of babies just to give her a leg up. Theres a common tendency to judge queer stories by a different standard than their heterosexual counterparts: sapphic romances are often considered And I think in every single one of those AU slots, there is a huge hint. This book revolves around someone who is dissociating with grief so deeply that she cannot quite bring herself to use the intimacy of a first-person voice, whose understanding of reality is so compromised that she cannot trust herself to report on it reliably to her reader. Canaan House is an island surrounded by water, and the space shuttles are dismantled shortly after everyone arrives: There is no escaping it. Despite their clashing personalities and mutual hatred of each other, Gideon is Harrow's only real choice of cavalier, primarily due to an atmospheric contamination incident around the time of their births that killed the rest of the Ninth House's children. You can be present in a moment, even an emotionally charged one, but also somewhere else entirely. I have always been fascinated by stories about people with dissociative identity disorder, because it feels like it lives next door to the dissociation I forced myself into to survive my childhood, and whats interesting about Harrow the Ninth is that it seems to be in conversation with stories about people who have alternate personalities inside themselves, working to absorb some of the burden of life. I even spent a lot of time conceiving of myself as a fictional character. newsletter. Just as Harrow is about to be killed, Gideon dies by suicide to force Harrow to become a Lyctor. My personal favorite is probably the scene where Augustine informs Harrow that if he wants Ortus the First to go, hell be giddy-gone. Harrow finds this to be a nonsensical statement, but once we understand that Harrows brain is overwriting Gideon the Firsts name as Ortus, it starts to make sense: Augustine is making a terrible pun on Gideons name. Shed just want the outfit, and she All of which is to say that I am absolutely here for the bag of tricks in this book, and perhaps most especially that long extended spree of fanfiction tropes we get as the script Harrow was running in her own brain to hide Gideons existence from herself starts to break down. Theres a plot reason for this move: Harrow has worked out that if she has no knowledge of Gideon, then she wont be able to fully absorb Gideons soul, and as a result Gideon wont be completely gone forever. That book got much richer in its second half, and Harrow is richer still. It becomes apparent that each House's necromancer and cavalier must work together to complete the puzzles in the basement, so Harrow and Gideon begrudgingly ally. That Harrow is so careful. If youre chatting here, Ill ask that you avoid spoiling Harrow the Ninth. The trilogy as a whole is quite chaste. Ianthe kills her cavalier without hesitation and becomes a Lyctor, much to the horror of the other Houses. But the arc of their quest is designed to force them to work together anyway because Lyctorhood depends on the connection between necromancer and cavalier. And heres another thing I noticed: I think Muir got much more confident as a writer between book one and book two. But now they have to depend on each other to survive because, of course, the minute everyone arrives at Caanan House (the creepy mansion), all communications are blacked out, all the fancy space shuttles they came in are pushed into the sea, and they are told there's a very good chance that all of them are going to die, because there's something horrible hidden inside Caanan House. Muir also appears to be confident that her fans are going to go back and reread as soon as they put the book down the first time, because Harrow is studded with Easter Eggs that only make sense upon a second reading. In Rowe's interview with Muir, Muir said that the "irreverent tone" was intended "to balance out the horror aspect and some of the heavier, more Gormenghastian stylings.
