So Id go over there and, of course, Bess Seguine was always over there. Im offered fortunes for the front field, for the side field, for the backfield. I slept in it, lived in it, ate in it. And especially when I came to Staten Island and I was working for Sherwin Williams, andwhat the hell, Florence? So when I get out of the service, I got a job. And a friend of mine I was very good friendly with was John. Burke: Oh, well, look what I did. She was great, I loved her. Burn it down, put a candle in the middle of the hall. Daller: Thats been acquired over the years. But it doesnt work that way. Still kept it. He was the top interior designer in New York. And Id go in and Id buy all the liquor with those stamps. And all those Eskimos just loved me. Burke: But everything will stay here exactly as it is, because if its going to be a museum, people are not going to come in and look at empty walls. Daller: Well, they hope to. And I always used to say, Wonder who lives there! and so forth and so on. Daller: No. And one day. Did you know that from? But the only thing was it was too small. I mean, this whole ceiling was shot. And then I shipped it all back home. I want to go back and ask for some more details about your childhood. Q: Okay, all of that. Then upstairs, was all the bedrooms. And I, throughout the time, I went from room to room in the house and restored it. Then I went looking for the big pieces. Valley Stream. They were great. And my neighbor across the street, who had lived there forever, she comes over again with a couple of little plants for me. I hope it isnt that the people who have access come in and empty it because Ive had people say, Oh, when youre not here, Im taking that painting, and Im taking that painting, and I want that couch, you know. Q: Well, Im pretty much at the end of my questions. So we need to get help. There were some gorgeous mansions. So I moved into the house here. I loved them too. Where all the servants lived. Burke: Hawaii. Q: Was it a similar style? But that was the cistern for doing all the laundry and everything in the basement. We had beautiful stuff in our home, all the time. That was a bigits still there. Daller: Yes, definitely. But before we know it, there wont be a thing left in the house. And, I had a lot of time over there in London and so I decided, Well, hell, Im going to go to school and learn something. So I took interior design. Im giving nothing away. So I went down and I just went around and everything I seenall the stuff you see hanging in this house, most of it come from me going around and wheeling and dealing in, you might as well say, the black market. And she was living here all by herself. It would have been spectacular but greed set in, and thats what they did. Burke: All that stuff from England? But the one that I remember was a great big brooch. His family was like aristocratic. Q: Can you tell me about studying interior design? Yes. I said to him, Are you kidding? Christ, a good ten, twelve years. Then I got shipped to Europe. Im sure some will. Burke: Yes. But that was a condo. So, I dont know. And if you can capture and keep something that looks like this, then this is a big plus for the area. Because I wanted the man that built the house, and this is the man that saved the house. If you give me a big helping hand here. I said, You know, I dont make that much money. Youre working too hard. [laughs]. Like this chair that youre sitting in, these are Chippendale chairs in the Chinese style. But I had all that money! Daller: Its life estate that he has. Burke: I went and I was stationed in England, and I loved being in England. Thats what I was. The Seguine Mansion, also known as The Seguine-Burke Mansion, is located on Lemon Creek near the southern shore of Staten Island. That was Mrs., what was her name? You cant ride on the street. You could imagine what the mansion looked like. And it was one of those busy, busy, goddamn nights. And so shes got the bridge, and it costs money. Q: What do you think the role of this house is, in this part of Staten Island? Q: And so when you were deciding what to collect, were you thinking about. Burke: Oh god. Its Greek Revival. I thought for sure that would never go. This was all field, all the way up, and she used to turn the horses loose on all the fields out there. George: Oh, I knew the Seguines for years. And I never got along with her that much because everything I wanted to do, she said, No, no, no, I dont like that. Mrs. Mackey. Good God! So one day, my sister Bess said to my mother and me, she said, Go pack. The fact that the Seguine familythis was the farmhouse, their mansion was in Rossvilleand thats long gone. All went into the landfill. Dont remember what happened to it, right? And you cant control it from the grave. And you can ask[gesturing to Daller], Daller: Everybody got something. And I walked into there and I walked up, and the lid was closed on the coffin. Staten Island. Architectural style and interior style? Yes, of course, they could eat all the grass. Everybody smelled like that. I mean, after it was finished, who cared? Burke: And what is a shame islike, you take [one of our former boarders], she has two horses that she used to keep here all the time. Just as long as its saved and its here. And then I said, well, now Im going to buy a home. And I often wondered what happened to that brooch because I gave it to Bess. I said, No, no, no. He upholstered that chair with the things in the back. It was similar, only bigger and more ornate. It was a mess of a mess. Thats the usual setup, I think, for historic houses. I mean, I had a beautiful condo in Florida. He was born Jan. 21, 1946, in The Bronx, N.Y. Bob is survived by his loving wife. He got involved with riding there and was constantly riding. [laughs]. Daller: Plus the fact, it cost a fortune to take away the manure. I moved in the house, and I would come in the house, and right in the front hallway, you could always smell lilacs. Of course, when I bought the house, that was all weeds growing up among the bricks. And that was the end of them. My brother, he come in and he said, What are you, nuts? Q: When you were youngwhen you were a kid. And I got these. Burke: So then I gave it to the Historic House Trust of New York. And finally, we met with John Krawchuk, when he became in office. So I paid it off and bought it in cash, with the cash. But down here, all the beautiful homes that were down here are gone. And they said, Well, we cant handle it, George. So when he left the apartment and came to Staten Island, things started to move back into different sisters again until he was ready to relocate it again. Burke: But I forgot what the other two things where. And they would give me all kinds of beautiful little carved objects and things that would be carved out of the whales teeth or. It was so overgrown in the front yard and everything. And the porch went all like this, around the house. I saved it years and years ago. She said, Now you can save it., And I said, Well, I can save it. Facebook gives people the power to. It was a mess. Thats whats in this whole house, all the things you see. Daller: See, now you learned about kitchens. They cant develop it. Oh, they loved me. Were going to this estate. Because she begged me. Put a candle right in the middle of that floor and go take a walk. [laughs] He called it the one-candle house. If you are going to stay, you better do this this and this, whatever the hell it was. He moved into the house shortly after the sale, and worked from the basement to the roof, and outwards throughout the grounds and stables, to complete the restoration. All these empty buildings and things. What is a shame is some of the mansionsthe really, really ornate mansions that were torn down. It was a sweet sixteen Ill never forget. So I just grew up with it, knowing it. Burke: Yes. They cant do anything. . Shit. And they said he had the box, and took it with them. You know, everybody grew up together. And then he got married and moved in with his wife. And it became quite the place to be. So Id go up there and Id say, Ed, Adriana, what do you got? Well, we got some old fabric, out of date fabric. Give it to me! And Id take it. I woke up with a sweat. Burke: Well, the house, actually, from the outside, is aoh, shitthe name of it went right out of my head. And I got a good price for that. Daller: Well, no, Mrs. Seguine allowed him to buy, Burke: No, I already had this house from the first deal. And then the Eric woke up, and I said, Well, I dont know. And he was stationed here, in St. George, and he would come home and wed live in the house. Its still there. And so people saidthey took all the horses and they moved to New Jersey. So it was fascinating. And Ed was very good at taking dents and things out of cars and he could spray paint.
